Hemp Houses for the Homeless is an initiative based in Halifax Nova Scotia. The plan is to develop efficient methods of creating a sustainable building material out of hemp. There are currently many manufacturers of hemp, but very few lumber manufacturers are based in Nova Scotia. Due to the fact that hemp is classified as Cannabis Sativa, it is regulated by Health Canada and strict growing regulations apply. Hemp lumber represents a more efficient way to sequester CO2. It grows much faster than traditional wood based lumber and leaks less CO2 back into the atmosphere over its lifetime. Hemp can also be used to manufacture a type of plastic, as well as a form of concrete called hempcrete.
